Michael's first solo exhibition and AO Vertical Space - 'CHINA' highlights an impressive body of photographic work created between 2006 and 2014. The exhibion features the famous mountains and landscapes of Huangshan, Lijiang and Yuanyang, as well as less known locations in Helionjang, Xiapu and Yunnan. It also includes Kenna's works from Beijing and Shanghai, and locally from Hong Kong.
Michael Kenna is arguably today's most important landscape photographer. His timeless monochrome images capture the inner essence of nature's beauty. Kenna filters reality through long time exposures and creates 'empty' space, which resonates with Chinese paintings. When photographing, Kenna looks for simplicity of linesand interesting abstract forms.
Michael Kenna is one of those rare people who resist the fast pace of today's city life. Instead, he works in solitude and takes his time. When he explores a new location, he never knows ahead of time how long he will be there: a few minutes, some hours or days. He often returns to thes same place repeatedly.
Mihcael Kenna's China offers a refreshing escape from our pressured city life, encouraging viewers to slow down and absorb the spirituality and beauty of what is around us.
